Diagnostic Assessment

  • Lower Secondary English Diagnostic Assessment

Unit 1: Foundation Of English Skills
This unit introduces learners to English as a skills-based subject rather than a content-based one. Learners are guided to understand what English assessments require, how meaning is created in texts, and how questions should be approached. The focus is on building confidence, reducing fear, and developing awareness of where answers come from in reading and writing tasks. By the end of this unit, learners will understand how English works, how marks are earned, and how to approach English tasks with clarity and purpose.

Unit 2: Language and Structure
This unit focuses on developing learners’ understanding of language structure, including word classes and sentence construction. Learners are explicitly taught how words function in sentences and how sentence structure affects meaning. The unit strengthens both reading comprehension and writing accuracy by helping learners recognise grammatical patterns, identify errors, and use language deliberately. By the end of this unit, learners will be able to identify parts of speech, understand sentence types, and apply this knowledge when reading and writing English texts.

Unit 3: Reading Comprehension Skills
This unit develops learners’ ability to understand, interpret, and respond to written texts accurately. Learners are explicitly taught how to extract information from texts, understand vocabulary in context, and make inferences based on evidence. The unit focuses on teaching comprehension as a skill, guiding learners step by step on how to locate answers, explain ideas clearly, and support responses with evidence from the text. By the end of this unit, learners will be able to approach reading comprehension tasks with confidence and accuracy, using strategies that are aligned with Cambridge Checkpoint assessment standards.

Unit 4: Summary and Response Writing
This unit develops learners’ ability to organise and express information clearly in written form. Learners are taught how to identify key ideas in a text and present them concisely in summary writing. They are also guided in responding to texts through structured written answers, using appropriate language and organisation. The unit focuses on clarity, accuracy, and relevance, helping learners avoid copying and instead express ideas in their own words. By the end of this unit, learners will be able to summarise information effectively and write clear, well-structured responses aligned with Cambridge Checkpoint expectations.

Unit 5: Composition Writing
In this unit, learners develop the ability to write their own extended pieces of writing. They will learn how to organise ideas, structure paragraphs, and express themselves clearly and creatively. The unit focuses on three main types of writing: narrative (story writing), descriptive (creating vivid images), and functional writing (clear, purposeful communication). Learners will be guided step-by-step through planning, writing, and improving their work, with a strong focus on clarity, structure, and language use.

Unit 6: Grammar and Language Accuracy
In this unit, learners will develop the grammatical knowledge and language accuracy needed for successful reading, writing, speaking and examination performance. Learners will explore how grammar works in real life communication and how different word classes function, how sentences are built, how punctuation affects meaning and how tense and agreement improve clarity. Throughout the unit, learners will apply grammar skills in comprehension, summary writing, response writing and composition writing. By the end of this unit, learners should be able to identify grammatical features, explain their purpose and use then correctly in their own writing.
