Diagnostic Assessment
The diagnostic assessment evaluates the learner’s current proficiency in AS-level English skills, including reading comprehension, language analysis, writing structure, vocabulary use, and exam readiness. The results are used to personalise instruction, prioritise focus areas, and track improvement throughout the course.

  • AS-Level Diagnostic Assessment

Phase 1: Foundation Skills
In ths phase learners develop the ability to understand texts accurately, identify writer’s intentions, and begin explaining ideas clearly using appropriate academic language. This phase provides the foundation for effective language analysis and structured writing in later stages of the curriculum.

Phase 2: Language Analysis and Interpretation
Phase 2 focuses on teaching learners how writers use language to create meaning and effect. Students develop skills in analysing word choice, imagery, tone, repetition, and structure, moving beyond summary to clear, evidence-based explanation. Emphasis is placed on using appropriate terminology, selecting relevant quotations, and explaining effects concisely in line with Cambridge AS assessment objectives. This phase builds the core analytical skills required for effective exam responses and prepares learners for advanced writing and exam technique in Phase 3.

Phase 3: Writing Development
Phase 3 develops learners’ ability to produce controlled, accurate, and effective written responses in directed, narrative, and descriptive writing tasks. Students are taught how to plan, structure, and refine their writing, with emphasis on coherence, vocabulary, tone, and accuracy. This phase balances creativity with exam control, ensuring students meet Cambridge A/AS writing criteria confidently and consistently.

Phase 4: Revision, Consolidation & Exam Readiness
Phase 4 focuses on reviewing key skills, strengthening weak areas, and preparing students to perform confidently in examination conditions. Learners revisit language analysis and writing skills through targeted practice, timed exercises, and structured feedback. Emphasis is placed on exam strategy, accuracy, time management, and confidence-building rather than introducing new content.
